Continua of Curriculum Expectations Grades 1-8

The Fractions Learning Pathways (FLP) is an online interactive planning tool which provides educators with a research informed framework for teaching fractions. It includes a range of field-tested tasks (grades 3-10) that have proven to be effective in Ontario schools. The tasks are mapped to specific fractions concepts and can be modified and/or adjusted to fit teacher and student needs. Video and photos are also included to bring the learning to life. The FLP planning tool also includes one page summaries of key fractions math ideas as well as anticipation guides that feature Ontario students’ thinking. 

The lessons provided are samples of an instructional trajectory, designed to promote early stages of algebraic reasoning. They are the fundamental lessons which will allow students to analyze and create increasingly complex patterns. It is intended that they be started early in the year and revisited with opportunities in-between and beyond these lessons to practice and deepen understanding at centres and through games, to create, analyze and name a variety of patterns generated by students using a variety of materials (e.g. concrete manipulatives, interactive white board, virtual manipulatives). 

It is intended that teachers and learning teams use these research-informed lessons, adapting them to their students’ needs. 

Mathematical Processes

"The mathematical processes can be seen as the processes through which students acquire and apply mathematical knowledge and skills. These processes are interconnected (The Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8 Mathematics, page 11)". These processes are developed along a continuum, across the grades. Assessment For and As Learning with the Mathematical Processes: This one page document includes learning goals and success criteria with sample questions and feedback for five of the mathematical processes. 


Generic Rubric for the Seven Mathematical Processes: This rubric shows possible connections between the mathematical processes and the achievement chart categories. 


Mathematics is more than content. Doing mathematics is a complex process and proficiency in mathematics means a certain level of expertise, competence, knowledge, and facility in mathematics. This article discusses the importance of recognizing mathematical processes and the challenge of examining mathematical processes in the assessment process. 

The following mathematical posters were provided to help students understand the Mathematical Processes. They are available  in both French and English.

Targeted Implementation and Planning Supports

Gap Closing resources are designed for students who need additional support in mathematics. For each topic in the resource, there is a diagnostic and a set of intervention materials. Diagnostics are designed to uncover the typical problems students have with a specific topic in the junior, intermediate, and senior grades.
